The Best Holiday Memories Are Never On The Itinerary
Think back to your favourite holiday. Not where you stayed. Not what year it was. The moment you remember most. Chances are, it wasn't the museum you carefully researched. Or the walk you'd highlighted months before. Or the restaurant that everyone said you had to visit. It was probably something much smaller. Something you never planned at all.
Maybe it was watching the sun come up with a cup of coffee in your hands or conversation that lasted long after dinner because nobody was watching the clock. Maybe it was finding a quiet beach you hadn't meant to stop at. Or simply sitting together in complete silence, listening to birdsong, and realising it had been a very long time since life had felt that quiet.
Over the years of welcoming guests to Lake Brunner, we've noticed something. The stories people tell when they're leaving are rarely about ticking something off a list. They're about moments.
We Spend So Much Time Planning The Perfect Holiday
It's understandable. Time away is precious. We want to make the most of it. So we research. We save places to visit. Map out places to see. Make reservations at must-eat restaurants. Then before we know it, our holiday starts looking a lot like the diary we've been trying to escape. There's nothing wrong with having a plan. But sometimes the best thing you can do is leave room for it to change. Because holidays have a funny way of surprising us when we stop trying to control every hour.
The Moments Guests Remember Most
When guests leave, we often ask them about the highlight of their stay. The answers are almost never what you'd expect. They tell us about watching mist drift across Lake Brunner while everyone else was still asleep. They talk about sitting by the fire after dinner, sharing another glass of wine because nobody needed to drive anywhere. They remember the tūī singing outside their window. The glowworms they stumbled across on an evening walk. The sound of rain on the roof while they curled up with a book. None of those moments were scheduled. None of them appeared on an itinerary. And yet they're often the ones that stay with people long after they've returned home.
Sometimes Doing Less Gives You More
Somewhere along the way, we've started believing that a successful holiday is a busy one. See as much as we can. Do more activities and experiences. Fit more into every day. But what if the opposite is true? What if the best holidays are the ones that leave room for unexpected moments? What if there was time for conversations that don’t need to end, time to linger over breakfast, time to sit quietly and watch the light change across the lake, or time to notice the things you would normally walk straight by? Sometimes the most meaningful part of travelling isn't what you do. It's how differently you feel while you're doing it.
The Beauty Of Leaving Space
One of the things we love most about hosting is watching guests slow down. Not because we tell them to. It just seems to happen. The first morning they're checking the weather and thinking about what comes next. By the second day, breakfast lasts a little longer and starts a little later. The phones appear a little less often. People stop asking what time it is. The pace changes. And when the pace changes, people notice more. A bellbird calling from the bush. Clouds lifting off the mountains. Steam rising from a morning coffee. The quiet satisfaction of having absolutely nowhere else to be.
The Holidays We Remember Feel Different
Years from now, you probably won't remember every walk you did. Or every photo you took. You'll remember how you felt.
Relaxed. Present. Connected.
Whether that feeling came from watching the stars appear over Lake Brunner. Laughing around the dinner table. Or simply spending a few days where someone else had taken care of the details. That's what stays with us. Not because we planned it. But because we were present enough to experience it.
Leave A Little Space
If there's one thing we've learnt from years of hosting guests, it's this:
Leave a little space in your plans.
Do not fill every hour with activities.
Have some spare days that are not pre-planned.
Sometimes the most memorable part of your holiday is the part you never saw coming. And perhaps that's exactly as it should be.
Ready To Slow Down?
At Lake Brunner Eco Lodge, we believe the best holidays aren't measured by how much you fit into each day. They're measured by how you feel when you leave. If you're looking for a place where there's room to slow down, reconnect, and let the unexpected unfold, we'd love to welcome you.
